Sydenham Gardens’ training opportunities to increase confidence and self-esteem

Sydenham Garden is an award-winning charity providing gardening, nature conservation and creative opportunities for the well-being of local residents
We provide a place where local people, particularly those coping with ill health, can gain confidence and self-esteem through work and community.

We offer training opportunities in areas of horticulture, conservation and arts & crafts, increasing the skills and future employability of our users.
Referred clients, known as co-workers, work alongside regular volunteers and trained staff to help maintain the community garden and nature reserve.
For those who prefer to develop their creative skills, we also offer a wide range of arts and crafts courses and activities.

The centre and nature reserve exists for the whole community, but will help particularly those coping with ill health.

Do you run self-management courses for people with long-term health conditions?

Sandra Christmas, Administrator on the Expert Patient Programme organised by Bromley’s PCT, would like to find out what other self-management courses are offered to people within the borough who have long term or chronic health conditions.

She says about the type of course she is looking for, “Self-management courses are not educational for a specific health condition. They aim to raise self-esteem, and self-confidence. People with long-term health conditions face many similar issues such as fatigue, pain, depression or just getting ‘the blues’.

“Other topics that can be covered in a self management course are: nutrition, relaxation, exercise, problem solving and action planning techniques. The aim is to take control of the long term or chronic condition and empower individuals to take the decisions that affect their lives.”

If you are running courses that cover any of these aspects, please contact Sandra by email sandra.christmas@bromleypct.nhs.uk or telephone or 020 8662 6693
