HYPERLINK \l "_Local_news_1" GO BACK Jail n Bail 2008 Are you a local businessperson who would be willing to be arrested to raise money for charity? Orpington based hospice, Harris HospisCare with St Christophers, is appealing for local business people to get involved in a unique fundraising event called Jail n Bail. This is the fourth year the charity has run the event and is looking for willing recruits to be arrested by officers from Bromley Metropolitan Police on Wednesday 10th December. Police officers will arrive at their place of work and arrest those taking part in front of friends and colleagues. They will be charged, hand cuffed and transported to jail in a police riot van with other business people. Once at the police station the Harris HospisCare felons will be forced to ring around their friends and colleagues to secure a minimum bail amount of 1,000 or spend the morning languishing in jail. So far four local business people have been recruited but at least three more are needed to take part. The four felons taking part so far are former Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Pauline Tunnicliffe, Simon Thackray managing partner at Thackray Williams, Bromley, Ian Payne, Bromley Town Centre Manager and Tom Merralls of TJM Law, Beckenham. During the afternoon there will be a press photo call at The Churchill Theatre, Bromley, following the arrest, live on stage, of one of this years Cinderella Panto stars. HYPERLINK \l "_Local_news_1" GO BACK Lancashire Foundation donates 15,000 to JusB youth charity On Friday 14th November at 4pm Michael Connor, General Counsel for Lancashire Insurance Company (UK) Limited, an insurance company that forms part of the Lancashire Insurance Group, and the Chairman of the UK Donations Committee of the companys charitable body, the Lancashire Foundation, will present 15,000 to Bromley youth charity JusB. JusB is an independent charity which serves the young people of Bromley. It was established in 2003 with the vision of providing a brighter future for young people. The charitys founder and chief executive, Rachel Archer explains We are constantly hearing in our news about the rise of gun and knife crime amongst young people and I am a firm believer in giving young people somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to, to turn this trend around. Charities like JusB are giving young people the support they need but we cant do this on our own, we need more businesses, like Lancashire, to have the foresight to invest in the future lives of young people. Very few donations we receive give unrestricted funding which makes this cash award even more special to us. It means we can use the money to pay for everyday essentials like our rent, utility bills and insurance costs. For more information visit the HYPERLINK "http://www.jusb.org.uk" \t "_blank" JusB website. HYPERLINK \l "_Local_news_1" GO BACK Closure of Orpington Treatment Centre postponed to March 2009 Plans to relocate surgical work from the Orpington Treatment Centre to the Princess Royal University Hospital have been delayed. (The closure of the Orpington Treatment Centre was announced as part of the Picture of Health decision.) The final move will now take place by March 31 2009, rather than in the coming weeks as originally planned to help Bromley Hospitals Trust meet its commitment to deal with a back-log of patients awaiting treatment under the Governments 18-week deadline (maximum waiting time of 18 weeks between referral and treatment). Trust Chief Executive, Mike Marchment said in a press release that the date of the transfer had always depended on the need to meet the18-week rule. HYPERLINK \l "_Local_news_1" GO BACK Lets Celebrate Diversity! The 21st October 2008 was the day that Bromley celebrated diversity within the Borough at an event organised by Lulu Pearce Ethnic Communities Programme Manager, together with partners from the London Borough of Bromley, Bromley PCT, Bromley Adult Education, the Metropolitan Police, the Safer Bromley Partnership, the Voluntary sector and local Schools. The event was hosted by the London Borough of Bromley. This event, held at the Civic Centre, was extremely well attended to the point that there was standing room only in the auditorium. Cllr Carr as Leader of the Council gave the welcoming speech and the event was presided over by the Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Denise Reddin. Bob Neil, Shadow Minister for Local Government was the Guest Speaker. It was wonderful to see Bromley residents and children from all sectors of our community enjoying and participating in performances that reflected the rich mix of cultures that exist in the Borough. Music, dance, poetry, drama and having fun was the order of the day, with all the performers putting in maximum effort to make it a day to remember. The event also provided an opportunity for people to socialise, network and chat with one another and the lunch was fantastic! You can get a flavour of the day by following this link to HYPERLINK "http://www.flickr.com/gp/28374129@N05/r6K66w" \t "_blank" the online photo album. HYPERLINK \l "_Local_news_1" GO BACK Community Links Bromley:Diversity Training By Jean Levy, CLB Chairman On Tuesday 4th November staff, trustees and volunteers of Community Links Bromley (CLB) took part in a Diversity Training day at the Warren, led by an outside facilitator, Bob Hodgson, who has much experience of facilitating this type of event for Bromley organisations. The training was felt by trustees to be an important step for the organisation to take in ensuring that equalities issues are understood by all those involved in working or volunteering for CLB. CLB exists to support the voluntary and community sector in Bromley, in order to help to improve the quality of life for all Bromley residents, and in that capacity it needs to be sure that it deals with all the diverse groups that exist on an equitable basis, understanding the sorts of issues that they may have to face. The agenda for the day attempted to cover all the various types of differences that exist in our society in 2008 race, class, gender, age, wealth, educational experience, faith, disability, sexual orientation, part time workers etc, and we worked together in small groups discussing the sorts of issues that might arise. We also watched video clips that provided useful examples of the types of prejudice and discrimination that can arise from our actions and attitudes, and the effects they can have on those on the receiving end. The tone of the day was kept light and there was humour in the issues with which we dealt, but the content was taken seriously and the result was that we all took an active part in the day. Everybody had a chance to say their piece and to pose questions when necessary. We had a session on language what it is acceptable to say and what not and picked up that its a good idea to listen to the BBC in order to keep up to date with language changes in this area. We also heard briefly about legislation. The last session was aimed at helping us to challenge others when we are faced with prejudice what to ignore, what to take issue with. In all, I think we all felt this was a day that made us think more deeply about our attitudes to others who are different from us in whatever way, and to explore how to behave towards them. By including the whole organisation, we have been able to ensure we work together towards the values of the organisation including reducing disadvantage and equality of access. For any other voluntary or community organisation that may feel they would benefit from a training session of this kind, Lulu Pearce, the Manager of the Ethnic Minorities Project, would be happy to provide recommendations for diversity trainers. You can reach her by phone on 0208 676 5650. HYPERLINK \l "_Local_news_1" GO BACK Bromley Hospitals Trust to merge with Queen Marys Sidcup and Queen Elisabeth Woolwich A special meeting of the Board of Bromley Hospitals on 4th November 2008 discussed and agreed a proposal for a merger between Bromley Hospitals Trust, Queen Marys Sidcup (QMS) and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich. This will be a merger of trust management and is not planned to affect services in each of the actual hospitals concerned or to merge sites. The decision of A Picture of Health will still be implemented (subject to the referral to the Secretary of State by the Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee of local councils). One factor in the decision is management sustainability given the high level of interim and acting staff in senior positions at both Bromley and QMS. There will be stakeholder consultation involving PCTs, other NHS bodies and local councils and MPs, but not a public consultation. A copy of the board paper is available at HYPERLINK "http://www.bromleyhospitals.nhs.uk" www.bromleyhospitals.nhs.uk click on 4th November meeting. More information will appear in future bulletins. It also asks for views to feed into the select committee programme which reviews the work of SEEDA, the region's development agency. There will be two closing dates for both first-round and second-round applications: 28 February 2009 for a decision in June 2009; And 31 August 2009 for a decision in December 2009. Parks for People offers grants of between 250,000 and 5 million for projects involving urban or rural green spaces designed for informal recreation and enjoyment. The definition of a park for this programme is: an existing designed urban or rural green space, the main purpose of which is for informal recreation and enjoyment. It includes parks, gardens, squares, walks and promenades. The priorities for selection of a park for funding are that the community values the park as part of their heritage; the parks meets local social, economic and environmental needs; and the park actively involves local people. The five outcomes for the proposed project also are: Increasing the range of audiences Conserving and improving the heritage value Increasing the range of volunteers involved Increasing knowledge and skills Improving management and maintenance All applications will go through two competitive assessment rounds. Contact them for advice on your project proposals before you apply using the pre-application enquiry form. They will let you know whether your park is likely to meet their definition and priorities for funding for this programme, and tell you what you should do next to make an application to them. They expect demand for funding under this programme to be high. Because of this, they will limit their grant support for capital works for new buildings and new features to 500,000. Total Fund Value: 1,000,000. Grant Value - minimum: 3,000 maximum: 50,000 The Futurebuilders initiative aims to increase and improve public service delivery through long-term investment in third sector organisations. Futurebuilders provides funding primarily in the form of low-interest loans to enable organisations to develop sufficiently to become investment ready, meaning that they are able to compete for service delivery contracts from statutory bodies. The loans are paid back with revenue from contracts with public sector agencies such as local authorities and primary care trusts. The Tender Fund is designed to help any third sector organisation big or small that stands a good chance of winning a specific public service delivery contract, but needs some money to help it tender successfully. The fund is not intended to increase tendering skills in general, but to help third sector organisations win specific contracts. For more information, please refer to the Question and Answer section of the Tender Fund webpage: HYPERLINK "http://www.futurebuilders-england.org.uk/content/Funding/TenderFund.aspx"www.futurebuilders-england.org.uk. HYPERLINK \l "_Volunteer_news_4" GO BACK Feel-good factor of employee volunteering Volunteering England, Englands volunteer development agency, is calling on businesses to embrace employer supported volunteering schemes as a feel-good tonic for staff, in a time of business and economic uncertainty. Employer supported volunteering schemes deliver huge benefits to companies. They can enhance a companys reputation, credibility, recruitment and staff retention, improve staff morale and work performance. They also offer effective ways to train and develop staff as well as helping the business cope with change management and aid Government and regulatory relations. Take this case study of the Yorkshire Waters volunteering programme called One Million Green Fingers, launched in September 2007 which aimed to utilise the companys thousands of volunteers to create 350 sustainable school gardens by 2010. To date 97 sustainable school gardens have been created by 891 volunteers from within Yorkshire Water, its sister organisations and contract partners. Each One Million Green Fingers garden contains elements that will help pupils learn about important topical issues such as water conservation, the environment, sustainability and healthy eating. Already 47 primary schools have signed up to take part in next years challenges proving that the campaign remains popular. Community affairs manager at Yorkshire Water Anne Reed said: The impact of our employee supported volunteering schemes over the years has been tremendous not just for the local community but for the individuals involved and the company as a whole. HYPERLINK "" \l "_Contents" back to contents ICT News National digital switchover has begun Sources: Communities and Local Government website and Society Guardian Digital technologies impact on almost every aspect of modern society is creating huge social benefits. They can improve how we work, how we are entertained, how we communicate with each other, the healthcare available to us, and how information and knowledge can be brought together and used for our benefit. These benefits however are not distributed equally to all groups and communities. Inequality in the use and application of digital technologies is a new driver of social exclusion, which risks accelerating existing social divides and creating new ones. Digital exclusion is a symptom of wider exclusion, but also a cause. New research and resources have been developed to assist local authorities, the third sector and private enterprise in tackling digital inclusion. An action plan (see consultations section at the end of the web page) outlines the key issues relating to the use of digital technology and argues why digital exclusion is an increasingly urgent social problem. HYPERLINK "http://www.communities.gov.uk/communities/digitalinclusion/" \t "_blank" Find out more. The Digital Switchover Community Outreach Programme supports people who do not qualify for the governments Switchover Help Scheme, but who nevertheless need or would like some assistance or advice in making the switch from analogue to digital TV. The programme is part of a new partnership between Age Concern, Help the Aged, Community Service Volunteers and Collective Enterprises Ltd., to deliver an outreach programme, providing advice and guidance about the Digital Television Switchover. One example of how digital inclusion can be made to work is the Whitehaven Digital and Technical Awareness Inclusion project (Data) run by Age Concern North West (ACNW), which offers advice and training in new technologies for over 55s. We found many people needed help using their new television handsets and DVD machines said Mary Bradley, Chief Officer of ANCNW but we also had scores of questions about using other technology. One positive outcome has been that 450 people have attended sessions such as texting workshops since April of this year. The model for outreach has had to be flexible with some sessions being run in residential homes or on a home visit. The pilot project has provided a model for a nationwide initiative Digital Outreach. It will operate alongside the national digital switch over programme that began on 6th November. The report examines trends of changing participation both within organisations and more widely within the wider community; changing patterns of distribution and consumption; the economy; and the impact of national politics on the future of the sector.
