The parental leave is subject to certain eligibility criteria, outlined below. Unpaid parental leave can be taken in addition to maternity, adoption or paternity leave. To be eligible, the employee must have one years continuous service by the time he or she wants to take leave. The employee must intend to use the leave for the purpose of caring for the child. The employee can take up to 13 weeks unpaid parental leave for each birth child who is not disabled, up to and including the childs fifth birthday. Where the child is disabled, the employee may take a maximum of 18 weeks leave up to and including the childs 18th birthday. If the child is adopted, the employee can take a maximum of 13 weeks leave, up to and including the fifth anniversary of the date of placement or the date of the childs 18th birthday, whichever is earlier. The employee cannot take more than 4 weeks parental leave in respect of each child during a given year (each year starts on the childs birthday or, in the case of adoption, the date of assuming responsibility for the child). Parental leave can normally only be taken in weekly instalments or in multiple weekly periods. If the employee decides to take less than a weeks leave, this will count as one week out of his/her entitlement. However, if the employee has a child with a disability, the employee may take the leave in shorter periods. In the case of multiple births, or the adoption of more than one child at a time, the employee may take a total of 13 weeks leave for each child. If the employee wishes to take parental leave, he/she will need to give [ORGANISATION NAME] at least 21 days written notice. The written notice should state the dates on which the period of leave is to begin and end. Whilst [ORGANISATION NAME] will aim to accommodate individual requests, it may be necessary to postpone a request for parental leave for up to six months, should the original date cause undue disruption. This postponement will be confirmed in writing not more than 7 days after the notice was given, and the reasons for postponement given.
