What is The Big Help Out?

The Big Help Out is a voluntary initiative supported by some of the UK’s biggest volunteer organisations, including the Scouts and the Royal Voluntary Service, as well as the Shaping the Future with Volunteering group of the UK’s leading volunteer-involving charities. The Big Help Out is open to all, and any organisation or individual can join in with or register an event via the app.

The objective of The Big Help Out is to raise awareness of volunteering throughout the UK and provide opportunities for people to experience volunteering and make a difference in their communities.

To mark His Majesty The King’s Coronation, thousands of organisations across the country are getting together to give us all the chance to help out in our own local communities.

Starting on Monday 8th May there will be opportunities for everyone to join in. No matter what you are good at, there’ll be something to suit helping hands of all shapes and sizes! From checking in on someone who’d like a bit of company or volunteering for a charity the more of us who join in, the bigger help we will be.

How can voluntary organisations get involved?

Voluntary organisations can upload volunteering opportunities onto the DoIt platform. Opportunities that can be uploaded are:

  • Taster sessions - light touch opportunities to try out volunteering with you, before making an ongoing commitment.
  • Information sessions - opportunities to find out more about what volunteering with you is like.
  • Volunteering roles - advertise your existing or new roles.

  • Small actions - actions that people can take that they can do from home or in a group such as Star spotting or signing a petition. A great way to get involved and support a cause.

If you are already registered on the DoIT platform, login here to add your opportunities. To create a DoIt account in order to register your volunteer opportunities, click here

A Communications toolkit is available on The Big Help Out website to spread the word to your communities and promote your events supporting the campaign. Visit the website to download the toolkit.

How can individuals get involved?

You can get any volunteer opportunity on The Big Help Out depending on the event rolled out by the charity organisations.

Some of the popular causes include but are not limited to: care for older people, community, animals, sports, art and culture, young people and children, and health and social care.

To get involved, visit The Big Help Out's volunteering page where you can either download the campaign app or sign up online and the opportunities available.
